Bucs claim Summers Out Bash "social distancing" championship

The Bucs rolled into Salisbury for its likely last "playoff type" tournament, maintaining their 6 feet.  After getting the rust off on Saturday in pool play, even a bad year like 2020 couldn't keep the Bucs from providing a thriller in the semis.  Byrd and Skeans combined to hold Lakeshore to 5 runs, and at the 1:49 mark of the game, down by 1, we were able to start the last inning.  The Bucs took advantage of some walks and Byrd was able to drop a sac bunt, which the pitcher then threw away down the RF line to score Edwards and tie the game.  With Fulton up, the sac/safety squeeze was on, and the pitcher threw a high fastball that hit off the catcher's glove and Corbin came in to score the winning run.

In the final, with Baum and C. Skeans getting 2 hits and an RBI each, and Corbin going all 7 with 9 ks, 1 walk, 4 hits, the Bucs held off the Force and went on to win their first-ever "social distancing" championship 4-1.

Bucs show well at PG 16U Nationals; Porter throws No-Hitter

The Bucs made their annual trip down to the PG WWBA Nationals and put on another display of hard-nose baseball against top competitors from across the country.  They finished mid pack of their pool at 3-4 but had some close games that could have resulted with possibly a few more wins.  The week was highlighted in the last game when Chance Porter was on fire.  Hitting 85 on the gun, and facing a very "confident" and talented Team Louisiana, Chance mowed batter after batter down, ending with a complete game No-Hit shutout win, 2-0.

Again, awesome fun for the guys, taking in some Top Golf, Wakeboarding, boating, etc.   And congrats to Chance & Ryan for being named to the All-tournament Team.

Bucs win PG 16U Super25 Pool; place 7 on All Tournament Team.

Playing in their first PG tournament in awhile, the Bucs came out strong and won both Saturday games to earn Pool winners at the PG Super25 Northeast Qualifier.  Congrats to the Bucs who made All Tournament team:  Jason, Chaney, Shawn, Billy, Nathaniel, Ryan & Toby.

Bucs open season with Sports at the Beach Title

May 27, 2019

The Bucs traveled down to SATB to begin their summer season - and made quite the splash.  After getting in some tough pool play games, the Bucs had a rematch vs. Mizuno Blacksox - who they lost to in pool play - in the semis.  Bucs came out strong and run ruled them in 5, 10-2.  In the finals versus a tough East Coast Royals team, the Bucs pitchers - Toby & Ryan - combined to allow 1 hit and 1 walk and shut out the Royals hitters.  In the meantime the Bucs used small ball to score and took the Championship, 3-0.

Selmer throws No Hitter shutout, Bucs claim title at SATB

September 2, 2018

PG places Corbin & Haschen on 15U WWBA All Tournament Team

Bucs finish Runner-Up in Pool at PG 15U WWBA Nationals

The Kent Island Bucs took a 4-1-1 record going into the final pool play game of the 2018 PG 15U WWBA Nationals and were playing pool leaders Kentucky Baseball Club (5-1-0).  With the Pool title and moving on to bracket play, KBC brought everything they had and took down the Bucs.

Starting the tournament out with a loss, the Bucs Nate Haschen put on a pitching display in Game 2.  Facing Hollman Hurricanes and their #1 pitching Luke Hollman, Hollman was able to keep the Bucs to 3 hits and 0 runs.  But, Haschen's display was just as impressive, only allowing 5 hits and also 0 runs, ending in a 0-0 tie.

With a 0-1-1 record, the Bucs caught fire, ripping off 4 straight wins, including a fantastic win over East Cobb Astros.  But even a little better was the 2:20 a.m. walkoff 3-2 win vs CBC. Simply a great showing for the week and a ton of fun for the guys.

Bucs place 7 on PG 14U NC All-tourney Team

The Bucs made a trip down to Georgia to compete in the Perfect Game 14U National Championships.  Came up just short in a few games, but their play was excellent.  PG recognized that and put 7 players on the All-Tournament Team:  Nate H. Nate B., Clayton, Nathaniel, Toby, Ryan and Cooper.  Congrats to the entire team though for showing that the Bucs belong at that level.

Bucs get runner-up at Perfect Game Super25 Regional; 5 named to All-Tournament Team

The Bucs almost made it 3 for 3 in tournament play but fell one game short at the Perfect Game Super25 Mid-Atlantic Regional.  It came down to the Bucs v. GoWags Diamond Deacons in the finals with the infamous Cole Wagner on the hill.  Though Wagner was impressive on the bump, the Bucs got out to an early lead, 2-0, fell behind on a run and then a towering 2-run HR, but tied it back up in the 4th 3-3.  GoWags bats caught fire in the bottom of the 5th, another 2-run bomb, and ended up scoring a few more, with a final of 9-3.

Five Bucs were named to the All-Tournament Team:  Toby, Ryan, Lee, Nate B. & Clayton.

Great weekend of ball, friends, family & fun!!!

Bucs Win 2014 Icebreaker; Skeans throws Perfect Game

March 16, 2014

In another amazing effort, and what has become another classic between two teams, the KI Bucs put on a comeback in the bottom of the 5th and were able to hold off the Calvert Cutters in the top of the 6th to win 8-7 and claim the 11U Icebreaker Championship.

In frigid conditions, with snow flurries abound, the Bucs, down 6-3 in the bottom of the 5th with two outs, rallied back with 5 runs to take a 8-6 lead.  In the top of the 6th, with a leadoff walk, Calvert was able to move the runner around the bases and eventually score him.  But the Bucs defense tightened up and was able to make three consecutive outs to seal the game.

On another note, on Saturday, Toby Skeans was a "strike machine" - as heard from the sidelines - against LOUYAA Lightning.  Toby threw a total of 36 pitches, 27 for strikes, the defense made all its plays, and the bats were alive (14 hits), as the Bucs won 13-0 in 4 innings and Skeans recorded a Perfect Game - his second in two years.

Skeans throws "perfect" Perfect Game

March 23, 2013

Rarely do the Bucs write about individual accomplishments, but once in a great while there is a history-making event so massive that it just has to be told - and on March 23 it happened.

In the Bucs second game of the Annapolis Open, fans witnessed a display by T. Skeans of what is now being called The Perfect Perfect Game.  Skeans, coming off two innings of solid work the evening before, used his control to strike out 7 of the 9 batters he faced.  Then, in an effort to keep anyone from reaching base, Skeans also fielded the two balls put in play and threw the runners out at first - thus having gotten credit for all nine put-outs.

In a full effort to support their pitcher, the Bucs team helped shorten the game by getting some hot bats and scoring 15 runs by the end of the third to thus invoke the mercy rule.

9 up, 9 down, 9 put-outs - Perfect.

Bucs Win Icebreaker

The Bucs, playing host to the 2013 Island Icebreaker tournament over the St. Patrick's Day weekend, pulled off three one-run games, including the Gold Championship, with a 3-2 win over the Calvert Cutters.

Over the weekend the Bucs had a come-from-behind win against Savage, as they were down 6-3 in the bottom of the 5th when the bats came alive and scored 4, sealing a 7-6 win.  Once the bats were heated up, they were able to defeat LOUYAA Thunder 14-0.  Then on Sunday, in a semi-final, with a commanding 11-4 lead, the Columbia Sun Devils bats decided to come out of the thaw (38 degrees outside), and storm back in the 6th, putting up 6.  The Bucs were able to stop them though and came away with a 11-10 win.

In the final - a re-match of the 2012 9U Cal Ripken State Championship - versus the Calvert Cutters, defense on both sides was amazing as there were multiple double-plays, diving catches, and the pitching was stellar.  In what took total team effort, the Bucs were able to slip by the Cutters.

Skeans throwing out the guy stealing second, and the batter popping out to second, and then a routine grounder, the Bucs were able to hold them off and take the Championship, 9-8.

Having won four in a row, they had to face a tough Pine-Richland team from PA.  But with Cresanto on the mound for the Bucs and a shakey PR pitcher, the Bucs put up 9 in the second inning which helped seal a 4 inning run-rule game, 14-4.
